Getting treatment

Fertility treatment, funded by the NHS, currently varies across the UK. In some areas, waiting lists for treatment can be long. The criteria you must meet in order to receive treatment can also vary. Your GP will be able to advise you about your eligibility for treatment. If your GP refers you to a specialist for further tests, the NHS will pay for this. All patients have the right to be referred to an NHS clinic for the first investigation.

You may wish to consider private treatment. Private treatment for infertility can be very expensive, and there is no guarantee that it will be successful. For example, a cycle of in vitro fertilisation ( IVF ), at a private clinic, typically costs between £4,000-£8,000, depending on the clinic and treatment selected.

NHS treatment

In theory, the following treatments are available, but availability varies:

  • fertility drugs
  • intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • in vitro fertilisation (IVF)
  • intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
  • IVF using donated eggs or sperm, provided donors are available
